These pages are to share some of our thoughts and approaches with you. Please email us at or phone 01772 695320 with any feedback.

The main focus of our healthy conversations is on five areas that can have the greatest impact on a person’s overall health and wellbeing:

    • Exercise: we will help people to start to get active (read more about our Fit Squad)
    • Alcohol: we will raise awareness to minimise harm from alcohol or reduce risky drinking and signpost people if they want some support with this
    • Nicotine: we will help people to stop and all of our services and facilities became smoke free in January 2015 (read more about our Quit Squad)

There is strong evidence to suggest that by focusing on these four areas, a person can reduce the risk of developing a disease later in life such as cancer or heart failure. We also know that by leading a healthier lifestyle people can add up to 14 years onto their life and increase their quality of life. There is good evidence to support the focus on these four lifestyle behaviours.

In the UK, individuals who did not engage in any of these four behaviours were 3.5 times more likely to die over a 20-year period than those who did. Annual costs to the NHS of cigarette smoking, alcohol-related conditions, physical inactivity and poor diet have been estimated to be £13.3bn. The WHO estimates that if these ‘big four’ behavioural risk factors were eliminated, up to ‘80% of heart diseases, stroke and type 2 diabetes and over a third of cancers could be prevented’.

    Why are we doing this?

We really believe that it is the right thing to do. As the main provider of health and wellbeing services for the county we should be making sure that everyone that uses our service has the information and the opportunity to make some changes that could improve their health and quality of life.
