Community Pain Management Service - Southport and Formby

Covid 19 Update

In accordance with guidance from the British Pain Society and national guidelines we have suspended face to face appointments for the time being. We are currently offering telephone appointments and are also utilising video consultations using a web passed platform called Attend Anywhere. We appreciate that these are not always ideal, however we are endeavouring to offer the best possible care we can during these unprecedented times.

If there is a clinical need for a patient to be seen in person a full individual risk assessment will be carried out to ensure that this can take place safely.

Your first appointment with the service will usually be with our medical doctor or one of our highly specialised physiotherapists. Whilst we try to keep to time, our appointments may run slightly late. First appointments usually last up to 30 minutes.

If English is not your first language please let us know in advance so that we can arrange an interpreter/signer for your appointment.

Please have with you a list of your current medication and if applicable, your completed questionnaires that were included with your appointment letter.

It would be helpful if you could think about the following questions before you attend for your appointment to enable us to tailor our support to your needs. You may want to make a note of some of your thoughts.

What are your best hopes for your appointment?

We understand that a lot of people will say that they want to be in less pain, or more in control of their pain. What would that look like for you and what difference would that make to your life?

What are the important questions to have answered at your appointment?

How will you know if the appointment has been helpful for you?

You might want to find out more about persistent pain before you attend, The team particularly likes the Tame the Beast video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikUzvSph7Z4&feature=emb_title and The Tazzy Persistent Pain Booklet (PDF file) https://www.knowpain.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/TazzyPersistentPainBooklet.pdf but you may also like to look at our Useful Resources section too.

If you are offered a face to face appointment

You may be asked to remove items of clothing to allow an examination to take place. We can arrange for a chaperone to be present if you prefer, please let us know in advance if at all possible if you would like us to arrange a chaperone. If English is not your first language please let us know in advance so that we can arrange an interpreter/signer for your appointment.

The aim of the multi-disciplinary Community Pain Service is to help patients reduce and/or manage pain in order to maximise their quality of life.

What we do

The team works in close partnership with Pain Clinic Plus, a group of people who themselves are service users and have experienced similar pain problems. Pain Clinic Plus aim to unite and support pain sufferers by way of informal meetings, talks and discussions.
