Ensuring equal access for all in South Cumbria
Working with non-English speakers
We have access to foreign language interpreters throughout the county and our practitioners are experienced in working in this way. We also have access to a number of materials translated into a range of languages.
LGBT*IQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Questioning, and other sexualities and genders)
There is significant evidence that the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community have higher rates of depression and anxiety, yet they are underrepresented in mental health services.
First Step are an inclusive service and are happy to work with people of any sexuality or gender. We have always supported the LGBT community, and have celebrated alongside them as supporters and friends, at Cumbria Pride events.
We have strong links with LGBT*IQ organisations in Cumbria, and previously ran a monthly drop in at the Sticky Bits LGBT Centre in Carlisle. Some of our practitioners have also been involved in the QuPiD (Queer Pathways into Diversity) European project.
OutReach Cumbria run an LGBT Telephone Helpline every Thursday 19.00 – 21.30 Are you lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender? Do you need to talk to someone or just wanting to find out about what’s on? Free Phone 0800 345 7440
Visit Cumbria’s First LGBT Centre, 6-8 Fisher St, Carlisle, Cumbria, CA3 8RN.
Contains the community café Sticky Bits, nightclub The Regency and houses various LGBT friendly community organisations for people of all sexualities and genders
We have no upper age limit in First Step, and would encourage those in the 65+ age group to contact us. Some of our practitioners have attended training sessions throughout the North West in improving services for the over 65s, and have cascaded this to the rest of the team. Evidence shows that talking therapies can be as effective in the over 65s category as the rest of the population.
