    Speciality Training (ST)

LSCFT hosts well established Specialty Training (ST) posts in all of the psychiatric specialities.

There are many opportunities to not only develop clinical skills but also to develop teaching, leadership, research and management skills through participation in our training programmes.

Protected time enables Specialty Trainees to attend the regional specialty teaching programmes. We have agreed with the General Adult ST regional training programme that we will be hosting some of the regional training days in LSCFT. The most recent one was titled ‘Management and Leadership’, which had excellent feedback and even included a plant-based lunch! As well as attending the regional training programmes, we now deliver an ST development programme in addition to this which involves an engagement session and a CPD session specific to this unique group of trainees.

Specialty Trainees are also encouraged to participate in our local initiatives such as teaching on the Kick Start Psychiatry programme and being part of the CASC development sessions. Trainees are also supported to attend our Local Academic Programme (LAP), and have the opportunity to chair sessions and to present their own cases/projects/research. We are also now running a Medical Education Fellowship programme to develop STs who wish to pursue a career in medical education.

We run an ST Consultant Interview Training Day to gain experience in preparing for the Consultant interview, using simulation to practice being in the hot seat and being interviewed by members of the Board.

LSCFT is a research focussed Trust and we have an active research department. Additionally, we have a Medical Education Research / QI Group for more educationally focussed projects, which link to the Specialty Training competencies.

We are also keen to develop an ST according to their individual needs and are more than willing to support a Specialty Trainee with this.

‘The medical education department always engages with us and I feel included.. The Consultant Interview training is very useful’ (ST Doctor, 2019)
