Ditch the sugar this New Year

Residents in Lancashire are being encouraged to cut down on their sugar intake with the help of a new sugar counting app.

The Fit Squad at Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust is welcoming the new app released from Public Health England which will show how much sugar is in everyday food and drink in a bid to help people cut down. The free app works by scanning the barcode of products and revealing the amount of total sugar the product contains in cubes and grams. The new app comes as it was announced that a third of 10-11 year olds and over a fifth of 4-5 year olds were overweight or obese.

Tracy Sutton, Healthy Lifestyles Service Manager at Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust said:

"The app is a great quick easy way to find out just how much sugar we are consuming in our everyday diet, it also contains information about how much sugar a person should have and provides information about sugar swaps and alternative options. As Obesity figures rise, it"s never been more important to improve the health and wellbeing of ourselves and our family. On average each year obesity costs the NHS over five billion pounds and that figure is due to rise each year."
