More Success for Grow Your Own Project

Posted on the 29th August 2014

Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust’s ‘Grow Your Own’ Project has been shortlisted for the Psychiatric Team of the Year for Outstanding Contribution to Sustainability in the national Royal College of Psychiatrists Awards.

The team who are based at Guild Park in Goosnargh have created a therapeutic outdoor space where service users can learn and develop their skills to support their recovery, whilst also benefitting the local environment by helping to grow and harvest organic seasonal food.  All the fruit and vegetables produced are then used within the kitchens at Guild Lodge for both service users and staff meals.

Elizabeth Harrison, ‘Grow your Own’ Project Lead at Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust, said:

“We are delighted to be nominated for this award. From the beginning we were keen for service users to be involved and it’s been amazing to watch how they have enjoyed learning new skills and how this in turned has helped improve their self-confidence and recovery giving them a positive outlook for the future.”

Steve Jameson, Property Services Director for Red Rose Corporate Services on behalf of Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust said:

“This project not only aides service user recovery but has created an area that provides, inspires and motivates everyone who is involved with the project. It captures the essence of belonging and has seen such positive and productive outcomes since it started. I am very proud of the team’s success and how they have showed true commitment, compassion and drive.”

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in London in November.
The team have also recently won various awards closer to home at the Goosnargh and Longridge show for some of the fruit and vegetables they have produced, and further afield were recently winners at the national NHS Sustainability Day Awards.
