World Diabetes Day

Health professionals at Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust are encouraging people with diabetes to be aware of the importance of a healthy breakfast as part of World Diabetes Day which is taking place on Friday 14 November.

World Diabetes Day is led by the International Diabetes Federation and this year marks the start of a three year campaign looking at the importance of healthy living and diabetes. It is estimated there are 382 million people currently living with diabetes in the world, with this figure set to rise to 592 million people by 2035.

Health professionals from the Trust’s Diabetes Education and Self Management for Ongoing and Newly Diagnosed (DESMOND) team are holding a stall at the Minerva Health Centre in Preston throughout the week providing advice and information about healthy eating as well as some fun activities and details of their education programmes for people who may have Type 2 diabetes.

Christine Elwell, Diabetes Education Coordinator at Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust said:

“World Diabetes Day provides a great opportunity to get people thinking about choices they can make to reduce the risk of developing diabetes or to help manage it. There are a staggering number of people living with diabetes, and the numbers are estimated to rise and rise with around 316 million people currently at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Worryingly, up to half of people with diabetes remain undiagnosed. However, over 70%, or around 150million cases, of Type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed by 2035 by simply adopting a healthier lifestyle.

“This year the campaign focuses on the importance of eating a healthy breakfast. By making small changes such as having low sugar high fibre rather than sugary cereals, wholemeal toast instead of white bread and pastries and cutting out the fry-ups can not only reduce the onset of Type 2 diabetes but will help to manage all types of diabetes. You may also notice an increase in your energy levels and generally feel better within yourself as an added bonus.”

The International Diabetes Federation has provided some top tips for ensuring you get a healthy start to the day:
  • Choosing water or unsweetened coffee or tea instead of fruit juice, soda, and other sugar sweetened beverages.
  • Eating at least three servings of vegetables every day, including green leafy vegetables such as spinach, lettuce or kale.
  • Eating up to three servings of fresh fruit every day.
  • Choosing unsalted nuts, a piece of fresh fruit or yoghurt for a snack.
  • Limiting your alcohol intake to a maximum of two standard drinks per day.
  • Choosing lean cuts of white meat, poultry and seafood instead of processed meat or red meat.
  • Choosing whole-grain bread instead of white bread, brown rice instead of white rice, wholegrain pasta instead of refined pasta.
  • Choosing unsaturated fats (olive oil, rapeseed oil, corn oil, or sunflower oil) instead of saturated fats (butter, ghee, animal fat, coconut oil or palm oil).

These recommendations will also help people with diabetes to achieve stable control.
