World Suicide Prevention Day 2015

Residents in Lancashire who are feeling low or concerned about their mental health are encouraged to contact the Wellbeing and Mental Health Helpline and not suffer in silence as part of World Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September.

World Suicide Prevention Day takes place on 10 September and this year aims to raise awareness of the importance of talking about problems and reaching out to vulnerable individuals. Over 800,000 people die from suicide each year and this campaign serves as a reminder that there are things that can be done to help people.

The Wellbeing and Mental Health Helpline is an out of hours listening and signposting service for people who are experiencing mental health issues and for people concerned about someone they know. It is open Monday to Friday 7pm to 11pm and Saturday and Sunday 12 midday to 12 midnight and they can be contacted on 0800 915 4640.

Lorraine Khalaf, Manager of the Wellbeing and Mental Health Helpline at Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust said:

“When people are feeling low or experiencing mental health issues, it can be a very lonely time. It is important that people around them are able to start a conversation, even simply asking how they are doing and really listening can help to reduce that feeling of loneliness. The Wellbeing and Mental Health Helpline provides a listening ear for people who are concerned about a loved one’s mental health, as well as for people who are experiencing low mood. We can signpost individuals to the most appropriate services for their care.

“It can be extremely difficult to take that first step and seek support, however we want people to know we are here and they don’t have to suffer alone.”

The helpline has dealt with callers who have felt so desperate that they were contemplating taking their own life. The trained helpline operators were there to show compassion, care and intervene in a sensitive manner. One caller testimonial states:

“The helpline saved my life; I was actively suicidal when I rung and they got me the help I needed, they took the fear away. Thank you, I am alive today because of them.”
