A teenage volunteer with the Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust has been named High Sheriff of Lancashire"s Young Citizen of the Year 2016.
Philippa Richings, 18, topped a list of over 50 young and inspiring people in Lancashire for her volunteer work with The CREW, a group of young people and their parents who have used the Trust"s Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) at The Junction in Lancaster and The Platform in Preston and are involved in the service"s continued development.
Philippa was handed the award at a ceremony held at Lancashire Constabulary earlier this month. Along with Philippa, another volunteer with The CREW, Elyssia Cockshott, was also shortlisted for the awards.
Darren Conway, Participation Worker at Lancashire Care, said, "Both Philippa and Elyssia have both received mental health care and wanted to use their experiences to contribute to The Crew and make a difference in the lives of the people we work with. It is only right that they both got this far in the awards. They"ve worked hard and increased in confidence since joining us. Despite spending time in hospital previously, they have progressed well and their contributions are worthy of being recognised."
Amanda Parker, High Sheriff of Lancashire, said, "We were delighted with the number and variety of entrants for this year"s prize, but, following careful adjudication, felt Philippa was a worthy winner. She has helped those in the county"s mental health services, sharing her experiences and providing valuable insight into an issue which is coming more and more into the public domain. These awards are designed to celebrate the fantastic work young people like Philippa do every day."
The Young Citizen of the Year Award promotes young people"s achievements, highlighting the valuable contribution they make to the communities in which they live. Judges at the awards this year included the High Sheriff, former High Sheriff Rodney Swarbrick and representatives from sponsors BAE Systems and the Lancashire Partnership against Crime (LANPAC).
