With National Smile Month presently underway, Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust believes that parents can play a huge role in preventing tooth decay and gum disease in children by ensuring they regularly brush their teeth with a fluoride toothpaste and cut down on sugary food and drinks.
Tooth decay and gum disease are the two most common and preventable dental problems, particularly with those who are vulnerable as they rely on others to care for them. The Trust is now calling on parents and carers to ensure that children and adults in their care practise good oral health.
Louise Corlett, Deputy Network Director for Adult Community Services at Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust, said:
“Oral health is extremely important from a young age and there’s a lot that people can do to prevent problems with their teeth later in life. Poor oral Health can lead to dental decay and gum disease. With tooth decay already apparent in many children by the age of three, a few simple steps can have a positive impact in maintaining good oral health. People don’t always realise how important looking after your teeth can be. Oral health is integral to overall health, as well as people’s self-esteem, their ability to eat, speak and socialise, and essential for wellbeing.
“We would encourage everyone to take a few simple steps to reduce the risk of dental disease – brushing your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, cutting down on sugary food and drinks, and visiting a dentist at regular intervals. It is important that these good habits are instilled from an early age. The Trust’s Dental Services work closely with parents, guardians and children to provide oral health advice, on a 1-1 basis through individual appointments for patients accessing the service and this is provided by the dentist, nurse and therapist.”
