Health Trust working in partnership with local GP Practice to provide community mental health service

Posted on the 25th May 2017

People in West Lancashire can now access mental health support from the Mindsmatter Service, within a local GP Practice.

The West Lancashire Mindsmatter Service located in Upholland was officially opened by Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust’s Chief Executive, Professor Heather Tierney-Moore on 24 May. The Mindsmatter Service lost their accommodation at Daniels Lane in Skelmersdale and were looking for temporary accommodation to continue seeing clients when they came across The Matthew Ryder Practice.

Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust’s Mindsmatter service provides talking therapies for adults aged 16 and over who are experiencing common mental health issues such as anxiety, depression and stress. The Mindsmatter Service is leasing the recently built annex at the rear of The Matthew Ryder Practice so that they can provide an accessible, community mental health service within a local GP practice.

Professor Heather Tierney-Moore, Chief Executive at Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust said:

“I am delighted to officially open the West Lancashire Mindsmatter Services new accommodation here at The Matthew Ryder Practice. This colocation of services enables mental and primary health care to be provided side by side within a theraputic community setting. The location of the practice and its public transport links means it can be easily accessed by anyone living in the West Lancashire area.

“This collaboration between ourselves and GP practice provides a great example of innovative partnership working in with the national policy. The practice has been a great success amongst patients and staff so far and we have received a lot of positive feedback. It is a welcoming and relaxing environment where patients in our care can comfortably attend their mental health appointments here at The Matthew Ryder Practice. We look forward to discussing projects similar to this in the future.”

Patrick Ryder, Senior Partner at The Matthew Ryder Practice said:

“The opening of the community mental health service for West Lancashire in collaboration with Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust sets a yardstick for other providers to improve the delivery of services. Providing the services closer to home in the community is key to improving access for patients to health services.

“We are keen to develop the collaboration with Lancashire Care to provide other services here in primary care in West Lancashire. The key to progress is a team approach, at ground level in consultation with patient groups.”

Ian Connor, High Intensity CBT Therapist in the West Lancashire Mindsmatter Team said:

“Unfortunately we lost our accommodation at Daniels Lane in Skelmersdale last year, it was a great facility located in the community which was purpose built for mental health. We began looking for a new site and recognised the need to find another venue located in the community,  which could be easily accessed by our patients. One of our reception staff who attended The Matthew Ryder Practice in Upholland mentioned the annexe at the back of the building.

“We wanted to find a venue that was therapeutic for both patients and the staff providing the service. We have had lots of fantastic feedback and everyone feels comfortable attending their appointments here at our new accommodation. The building is spacious, light and there is a great view from the rear of the practice which really helps when we are bringing our patients in to a relaxing environment.”

The Mindsmatter service offers a variety of different interventions and support including stress management courses, development courses, supported online programmes, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and counselling.

People can access the service via the online referral form from the comfort of their own home, by post, visiting their GP or telephone on 01695 684177. For more information about the Mindsmatter service and to access the online self-referral form please visit
