Dedicated Volunteer wins Volunteer of the Year Award!

Posted on the 1st November 2017

A volunteer within Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust’s bike revival scheme has recently been awarded a Cycling UK Volunteer of the Year Award.

Mick Buckley, a volunteer at Lancashire Care’s Ribbleton Bike Revival project in Preston was awarded the Best Cycling Achievement and Individual Achiever of the Year Award for his commitment to supporting people to experience cycling.

Mick is a qualified cycle mechanic with years of experience, who has been selflessly volunteering for Ribbleton Bike Revival for two and a half years. Mike volunteers for around 3 days a week and has worked over 2300 unpaid hours for the Trust. He was presented the award by Chris Boardman MBE and Lee Craigie at The Big Bike Celebration, which was held in Birmingham earlier this month.

The Volunteers of the Year Awards celebrate a variety of individuals, groups and clubs from across the UK that are passionate about encouraging others to get outdoors and physically active through cycling. Without hundreds of volunteers, Cycling UK would not be able to encourage thousands more people to cycle every year.

Franc Ashcroft, Project Coordinator at Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust said:

“We work in a difficult location for community involvement it has more than its share of challenges. Mick takes it in his stride working tirelessly to try to engage with them and send them away with some top cycle repair tips and demonstrations. His commitment and enthusiasm allows him time to spend with the youths.

“Mick also attends community events at weekends and evenings during the summer months doing led rides. He often takes home bikes so that he can continue the unfinished repair so customers can collect next day. As a cycle recycle project we don’t have a vehicle to collect donated bikes and deliver out repaired ones, again its Mick who offers his car for use.

“Mick is one volunteer who truly deserves recognition and this award, it goes without saying that his role is absolutely pivotal to the smooth running of this project. Well done Mick!”
