Do you feel like life has shown you a red card? Contact Goal Difference

Posted on the 7th December 2017

Men living in Chorley and Leyland who are suffering from common mental health problems are being encouraged to set themselves realistic goals to improve the way they feel by joining a unique self-development course called Goal Difference.

Male suicide is the UK’s single biggest cause of death in men under 45, with around 3 out of 4 suicides involving men. As a result, Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust’s Mindsmatter Service is appealing for men who need mental health support to get in touch and join its Goal Difference programme.

Paul Clarkson, Goal Difference programme lead at Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust, said:

“Do you feel like life has shown you a red card, or are you struggling with stress, low mood or anxiety? If so, then the Goal Difference programme we are offering may help you tackle all the things that make you feel down or stressed. Many men are reluctant to seek the help and advice they need when it comes to mental health. This is often due to the embarrassment and the stigma that surrounds it. Goal Difference is a programme that provides a confidential place where men of all ages can get together and each week learn different skills to help improve their mental health.”

“We’ve had lots of positive feedback from our past events. Participants say that they have become more aware of what drives their thoughts, worries, feelings and behaviours, that it has helped them understand their problems and that they now feel better equipped to deal with these problems and any future problems.”

Goal Difference is a free 11-week course. The next programme begins on 4 January and will be held at Chorley Football Club, Chorley, PR7 3DU. It is open to men with mild to moderate mental health problems such as anxiety, depression and low mood. Participants will learn to understand their thoughts, learn new coping strategies and develop assertive skills. It also supports men to challenge unhelpful ways of thinking, learn to make changes to behaviours that are maintaining the way they feel, problem solve and set goals effectively.
