The CQC has published its most recent inspection reports for Lancashire Care and we are disappointed to have received an overall rating of requires improvement following the inspection of 5 of its core service lines between January and February this year.
The inspection team visited our secure services at Guild Lodge and Longridge Hospital, which were both rated as good. A rating of good overall was also assigned for caring and responsiveness, which we are proud of as it demonstrates how our frontline teams are dedicated and committed to meeting patient’s needs. The CQC also commented on the openness and honesty that they had witnessed at the Trust.
The CQC team also looked at our children’s and adult mental health wards and crisis services including places of safety (136 suites) and these are the services in which the inspectors have reported that improvements need to be made.
Having identified issues within services that had already been openly shared with the CQC, the reports confirm the areas that the Trust needs to focus on to make improvements and action is already being taken. We also recognise that there are some aspects of the well-led domain that need to be addressed at an operational level. At a strategic level the inspection team were assured that Board members have good oversight and understanding of the key priorities, risks and challenges faced by the Trust and had identified actions to address them. Some of these issues exist within the organisation and some require the support of partners in the health economy to address.
This year has seen an increased demand for mental health services nationally and this has had an impact on the rating to some degree due to challenges with staffing, which in turn affects rates of supervision, appraisal and training amongst staff that we know needs addressing in order to maintain a high standard of care. A system wide response is needed to address some of the challenges that the Trust has been experiencing within its mental health services and the Trust has now secured this support and a joint solution to system pressures is to be progressed.

We have dedicated and hard working people at Lancashire Care and this was recognised by the inspection team who saw first hand how caring and responsive our employees are towards patients.
“It is also important that the more positive aspects of the report are not lost. We are really proud of our secure services, Guild Lodge for maintaining the rating of good and of the team at Longridge Hospital who are now also rated good which means our community services overall have a good rating.
“We are clear about what needs to be done to ensure that the people using our services have a good experience and receive high quality services. I personally, along with my colleagues on the Board and senior managers are committed to ensuring that frontline teams are supported to take the learning from this inspection and working together to make the required improvements and build on the positive aspects of it.”
