Join breastfeeding mothers for the Big Latch On

Posted on the 31st July 2018

To mark World Breastfeeding Week (1-7 August), health professionals from Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust are promoting a series of synchronised breastfeeding events across the county where mums will be able to also gain peer support and access guidance on breastfeeding.

The synchronised breastfeeding, called the “Big Latch On,” is a global event in which thousands of people across the world will get together to breastfeed. The initiative is being supported globally by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action, and is being held during World Breastfeeding Week.

Katie Wharton, Infant Feeding Coordinator at Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust’s Infant Feeding Team, said:

“The first Big Latch On took place in Aotearoa, New Zealand in 2005; it was introduced in the US in 2010 and has now taken off globally. This year the goal is to break the current Global Big Latch On record of 17,992 children breastfeeding at 758 locations, across 23 countries. Our long-term vision is that one day a Global Big Latch On event will be held within walking distance of every family in the world.”

Big Latch On events in Lancashire are as follows:

  • Central Lancashire: 9.30am - 11.30am, 3 August at Hesketh Bank Christian Centre, Moss Lane, Hesketh Bank, Preston, PR4 6AA.
  • West Lancashire: 10.00am - 12.00pm, 3 August at Park Neighbourhood Centre, Barnes Road, Skelmersdale, WN8 8HN.
  • East Lancashire: 9.00am - 11.00am, 4 August at West Craven BFFs – Breastfeeding Friends, Civic Hall, Barnoldswick, BB18 5NA

Breastfeeding contributes to the normal growth and development of babies/children. The World Health Organisation recommends breastfeeding exclusively for the first six months of a baby's life to optimize these benefits, continuing to breastfeed for 2 years and as long thereafter as is mutually desired by a woman and her child.
