The Trust has officially opened a new multi-purpose outdoor pitch at one of its secure mental health units to encourage service users to get active, gain sporting qualifications and improve overall wellbeing.
The pitch was officially opened on Friday 3 May by Preston North End (PNE) defender Tommy Spurr. The all-weather pitch is located at Guild Lodge, a secure mental health unit run by Lancashire Care in Preston. The aim of this initiative is to support service users to get better by enabling them to go outdoors, increase their self-esteem, health and wellbeing, and experience a sense of achievement.
We are also working with Preston North End Community & Education Trust which is providing coaching staff to deliver football training sessions to service users each week. Staff will introduce less active service users by running a multi skills session to gradually introduce them to physical activity.
The partnership has so far benefitted service users by providing them with opportunities to gain recognised qualifications through the PNE Community & Education Programme, something that will also enable them to progress on to voluntary or paid work in the future. One service user is hoping to volunteer with the Preston North End Community & Education Trust in the future to coach disadvantaged youngsters and pursue football coaching as a future career. The Trust’s Occupational Therapy Department is also looking at using the pitch for other types of sports that includes tennis and netball.
Steve Jameson, Property Services Director at Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust, said:
“The official opening of the pitch was fantastic and it is wonderful to see what a difference it has made to the lives of service users and staff already. I want to say a huge thank you to the staff in our Occupational Therapy Department who did a brilliant job in arranging the event and organising everything so well. The pitch has been funded through the Property Services Innovation Fund which had built up over many years and I am so pleased that it has been used for this great initiative.”
