Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust has recently appointed a new Director of Nursing and Quality from an NHS trust that was rated ‘Outstanding’ and who is set to bring a wealth of knowledge and experience in the delivery of excellent healthcare in the North West.
Maria Nelligan has joined Lancashire Care from North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare NHS Trust (NSCHT) which the Care Quality Commission (CQC) rated ‘Outstanding’ in March this year. NSCHT is one of only two specialist mental health trusts in the country to be rated Outstanding.
Maria brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the North West and is committed to ensuring improvements in the delivery of mental health provision across Lancashire and South Cumbria along with the Trust’s partner organisations that include Northumberland Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust, which was also rated ‘Outstanding’ by the CQC.
Maria was pivotal in NSCHT obtaining their recent ‘Outstanding’ CQC rating and her experience will be crucial in supporting Lancashire Care’s improvement journey.
Maria Nelligan, Director of Nursing and Quality at Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust, said of her appointment:
“I am absolutely delighted to be taking on this exciting role at Lancashire Care. It will be a privilege to have the opportunity to support quality improvement with service users, staff and also partners.”

She has held a number of operational and clinical roles, including professional lead and Services Manager, until her appointment to Deputy Director of Nursing & Therapies from 2004 at Cheshire & Wirral Partnership NHS Trust. In October 2015, she joined NSCHT as the Executive Director of Nursing & Quality and took the leading role in taking forward continuous improvement and the trust’s CQC improvement journey.
