'You can do it!'

Posted on the 6th May 2014

Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust’s stop smoking service is urging quitters not to struggle on their own but to get in touch. The Quit Squad is holding the sessions at locations in Central Lancashire to enable people to book an appointment or simply drop in for expert help and advice.

Julie Trezise, Quit Squad Service Manager at Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust said:

“People are 4 times more likely to succeed in stopping smoking with expert help and advice than if they attempt it alone. Our sessions are informal and tailored to the individual; people have nothing to lose by contacting us but a lot to gain!

“We’re often told by quitters that they can’t believe how quickly they started to feel the benefits to their health. We’re here to help anyone who wants to quit smoking and even if people are just considering it, we’re urging them to get in touch.”

Joanne Smith (30) from Preston had been a smoker for around 17 years. She had tried to quit several times however would only last a couple of weeks and then start smoking again. When she found out she was pregnant with her second child, Joanne’s midwife pointed her in the direction of the Quit Squad. Joanne said:

At first I was nervous about attending, I had tried to quit in the past without success and I was worried the same thing would happen again. However, the help and support I received was fantastic. I have been attending sessions for over 6 months now and have managed to stay off the cigarettes.

“During my previous pregnancy I was still smoking and I noticed a huge difference this time around with Freddie. He was a lot more settled and had a higher birth weight. It just shows that smoking really can have an impact on the baby.”

Joanne has quit along with her partner and she said one of the benefits they have noticed is the amount of money they have saved:

It costs a lot of money to buy cigarettes these days, so financially we are better off now we have quit. We are putting aside the money we would have spent on packets of cigarettes and are using this to pay for a family holiday and to go towards the kids.

“Choosing to stop smoking has so many benefits. Not only has it improved my health, but that of my children. It also allows us to use the money in a more productive way and we get to spend quality time together as a family. The Quit Squad have really helped me in my journey, and continue to provide brilliant support and I would encourage anyone who is thinking of giving up to get in touch with them and go for it, you can do it!”
