We are delighted to announce that we have achieved Teaching Trust status, marking our first step toward becoming a University Hospitals Trust. This milestone reflects the development of the sustainable, integrated partnerships required for future University Trust status, and we are fortunate to have a long‑standing collaboration with the Faculty of Health and Medicine at Lancaster University as our primary academic partner.
As a Trust, we host students from a range of Lancaster University (LU) programmes, including the Medical School and the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, and many of our colleagues hold honorary academic titles in recognition of their contribution to research and education. We also support a joint clinical academic role in mental health. Additionally, nursing, social work and allied health professionals in the Trust contribute to LU teaching and research programmes. Many of these colleagues supported the successful bid for a Mental Health Research Group Award for Lancaster University from the National Institute of Health and Care Research.
Together, we look forward to continuing our partnership to improve the health and wellbeing of our region, supporting continuous improvement in healthcare and contributing to the transformation required to meet the ambitions of the NHS 10 Year Health Plan.
Becoming a Teaching Trust highlights our work across research, education, innovation and engagement, particularly in five shared priority areas: digital health, health inequalities, mental health, ageing, and children and young people. The steps toward University Trust include a formal partnership setting out our goals for clinical education, workforce development, research and innovation.
We will develop clinical academic posts for psychiatrists to support University Trust requirements and create wider opportunities for multidisciplinary involvement in research and education.
Achieving Teaching Trust status is an important step for our patients, families, carers and colleagues. It strengthens our commitment to improving population health through evidence‑based practice and academic partnership, enabling us to deliver the best possible care. It also reinforces our ambition to be a lead employer of choice, attracting clinical talent to our region and supporting our aim of fostering joy and pride in our work.
