Meet Specialty Doctor Nudrat Naz who works at The Harbour Hospital in Blackpool and is celebrating South Asian Heritage Month.
Known as Nuds, she was happy to share her reflections about how some of her cultural traits and traditions influence and enhance the care she delivers on a daily basis on the wards there, which include older adult and dementia wards.
Dr Nuds reveals:
“Working for the Trust as a Specialty Doctor on inpatient units has been a deeply meaningful journey. Coming from Pakistan, a country rich in history, diversity, and deep-rooted values of hospitality and resilience, I’ve found that my background has greatly enriched both my personal and professional life here in the UK.
Culturally, I bring with me a strong emphasis on respect for elders, compassion towards the vulnerable, and a deep sense of community, values that align well with the ethos of the NHS and our Trust. In clinical practice, this helps me approach patients with empathy and patience, especially in challenging situations.
My upbringing in Pakistan has also made me highly adaptable, resilient, and appreciative of cultural differences, skills that are invaluable in a multicultural healthcare environment. Understanding how important faith, family, and cultural identity can be in a patient’s recovery allows me to contribute to more holistic and culturally sensitive care.
Participating in South Asian Heritage Month gives me the chance not only to celebrate where I come from but also to reflect on how our diverse backgrounds come together to strengthen the care we provide. I'm so proud of my heritage and to be part of a Trust where differences are not only respected but also celebrated.”
